After web-blocking in the UK – Pirate Party Luxembourg creates Proxy for “The Pirate Bay”

After a proxy of the Pirate Party UK had to be taken down following massive pressure from the content industry, the Pirate Party Luxembourg decided to link to “The Pirate Bay” from Luxembourg. This allows Internet users all over Europe that are affected by the Internet censorship to access the website. “The Pirate Bay” is now available via http://tpb.piraten.lu/.

In the UK, the search engine “The Pirate Bay” has been censored following pressure from lobbyists and the content organisations[1]. The reason for the web-blocking are the supposed “illegal copies” of music, movies and the like that “The Pirate Bay” links to. “The Pirate Bay is only a search-engine, like Google.” says Sven Clement, president of the Pirate Party. “Due to pressure from lobbyists, politicians all over Europe are incited to expand the censorship infrastructure to prevent freedom of expression, the right to information and the free exchange of culture. With our proxy, we help to circumvent the Internet censorship of European countries!”

The Pirate Bay is also blocked in Belgium and the Netherlands. In the Netherlands, the Pirate Party was even forbidden to publish information about the censorship measures.[2] “We are convinced that we will not face legal actions in Luxembourg” says Sven Clement. Economy Minister Schneider had declared in early 2012 that even “illegal downloading (schwarzes Downloaden)” is permitted in Luxembourg.[3] “The proxy can not be blocked in Luxembourg!” says Sven Clement. “Neither we, nor ‘The Pirate Bay’ are hosting illegal content. We provide the site free of charge, without any commercial interest.”

With this action the Pirate Party supports not only the free circulation of culture and information, but also the thousands of artists who use “The Pirate Bay” as a legal platform to advertise and distribute their art. [4] “The content industry wants to ban the car to protect the horse carriage industry.” concludes Sven Clement. “Pirates stand for innovation and free culture. While other parties hold their evening debates, we act for a second time after the Wikileaks-blockade and actively fight against censorship attempts in Europe!”
